From a happy day to a sad day. Four years ago, my dad, Jack Kiley died. I was on the phone with Bettye(who was on the road of course), when a call came in, I told her to hold, it was the nursing home, saying that he died. Of course, when I got back with Bettye, she was so hurt to not be here with me. But such is the life of a working musician. I never thought I would miss him this much... Harold Walter Jack Kiley Obituary Published in Star-Ledger on July 25, 2010 Harold Walter Jack Kiley, son of the late Isabella Sutherland and Austin Kiley, husband of the late Hyacinth Curran, brother of the late Peter Kiley and Sydney Margolis, passed away at the age of 90 on July 17, 2010, of heart failure. Mr. Kiley is survived by a son, Kevin; daughter, Kathleen; sisters, Isabel Figlian and Elizabeth Weishapl; granddaughters, Colleen Longo and Theresa Quittner Palmieri, and great-granddaughters, Leah and Jackie Palmieri. Born in Nova Scotia, he was raised in Hillside, N.J. A sharp dresser and terrific dancer, he spent much of his youth looking for ladies in the clubs of Harlem and Newark. A decorated World War II veteran, Mr. Kiley served in Italy and in North Africa. He married Hyacinth Curran in 1946. A lifelong Democrat, he worked for the democratic machine in the 50s and 60s. He was an avid golfer, and especially liked the 19th hole. He started his own building supply business, Jack Kiley, Inc., which he and his wife Hyacinth ran until her death in 1993, at which time he sold the business. He lived in West Orange, N.J., for most of his life. He was a larger than life character, and a real mans man. He was proud of his Irish-Scottish lineage. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his great sense of humor, his big heart, his big temper, and, after work, his voracious beer drinking. His memory will live on in the many stories that will be told.
