In our instant gratification society, the quick visual improvement explains why disguised starvation remains the mainstay of the weight-loss industry. But, inside the body is getting ugly. Scientists have known for 40 years that the starving body goes immediately into defensive mode. It reduces energy to exhaustion, reduces body heating to shiver mode, excites the fat storage enzyme, lipoprotein lipase, and increases appetite to ferocious. Three months on such a diet and you’ve lost all the gains you sweated for over the last two years. It’s suddenly got uglier. Now you have less muscle to burn the fat. Muscle is the engine in which bodyfat is burned. In reward for suffering the misery of starving, you also clobber your future chances to control bodyfat.(4) OK so I won’t starve, just skip some meals. It must reduce calories. Right? So it must reduce bodyfat. Wrong! Skipping meals destabilizes your insulin. When you do eat, you get a big insulin surge. Insulin is a storage hormone. It causes your body to store everything. Not only do you store all the food beyond maintenance level, but your liver converts all the excess insulin into triglycerides – fat, - and stores that too.(5) So you can cut calories by skipping meals, and GAIN body fat.
