From Cato Institute, Washington, D. C. -- We’re kicking off the weekly Cato Summer Sale ebook special with Timothy Sandefurs The Conscience of the Constitution. Recently reviewed by George Will in the Washington Post as a book that lucidly explains the intensity of conservatisms disagreements with progressivism, The Conscience of the Constitution documents a vital, forgotten truth: our Constitution was written not to empower democracy, but to secure liberty. The e-book for $1.99 is available from now through July 6. Big Losers in GDP Report: Democrats.” U.S. Economy Shrinks by Most in Five Years. The economy shrank almost 3 percent in Q1. GDPs Obamacare Downgrade. I always had a problem understanding the phrase the chickens have come home to roost. But it finally made some sense when I read those headlines, which are in large part the result of what happened about a year ago during the so-called budget fights. Consider the 2014 Budget of the United States federal government -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_United_States_federal_budget -- Submitted April 10, 2013 Submitted by Barack Obama Submitted to 113th Congress Total revenue $3.03 trillion (requested) Total expenditures $3.77 trillion (requested) Deficit $744 billion (requested) $492 billion (projected) 4.4% of GDP (requested) 2.8% of GDP (projected) Debt $18.23 trillion (requested) 107.1% of GDP ------------------------------ The 2014 United States federal budget is the budget to fund government operations for the fiscal year (FY) 2014, which began on October 1, 2013 and ends on September 30, 2014. The original spending request was issued by President Barack Obama on April 10, 2013. The actual appropriations for fiscal year 2014 must be enacted by both houses of Congress before they can take effect, in accordance with the United States budget process. The fiscal year 2014 United States budget exists only as several competing drafts; no official budget has been approved. (Yellow highlights mine.) The NMRP headlines indicate that the chickens are indeed coming home to roost. Or to put it another way: the consequences of wrong actions are taking effect. The cause of a lack of a budget was, you will recall, a loud rejection of Rand Paul and Paul Ryans budgets and an extended, vociferous fight over amended proposals and counter proposals and rejections of everything. Rand Paul has been submitting budget proposals since some time before 2010. His efforts and those of Paul Ryan, Obama sarcastically rejected or ignored in order to allege that Republicans dont do anything so that he could justify his reach beyond Executive parameters. Harrys Reids allegation that Republicans are obstructionists is equally megalomanic Their megalomania is in accord with other Progressives, a web site of which listed Five worst things about Rand Pauls Budget Proposal: 1. Privatizes Social Security and Medicare. 2. Institutes a flat tax. 3. Eliminates investment taxes. 4. Abolishes the Dept. of Education. 5. Leaves to the states Medicaid, food stamps and other nutrition assistance programs. thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/03/25/1771561/the-5-worst-things-about-rand-pauls-budget-proposal/ I submit that one cannot have a debt that is more than the GDP and rising to over $18 trillion without serious financial consequences to every working American, employer and employee alike. I submit that as tax reform is denied and more and higher taxes are foisted upon Americans they know they will have less to live on. I submit that both employers and employees recognize those consequences. When requests in a federal budget are made in such high numbers -- granted or not -- the fact remains that such requests were made. That fact does not promote economic certainty, telling us that political leadership is responsible and everything is hunky-dory. It does not take much to realize that businesses recognize what it means for a federal budget to make such requests. They know welfare statists are in control of Congress. They know that without a budget there is no restraint upon federal spending. They know that minimum wages are rising in far too many states. They know the Fed remains transfixed as hyper-inflation gains momentum. They know that Obama continues to push for Executive control of all branches of government. So, businesspeople do not expand, they lay off employees, they pull back from R&D, they close doors. The result: the economy shrinks -- something that surprises only Progressives, evidently. And the rest of us? Well, Americans, we know what we have to do. And come November we surely had better do it. ===###===
