From upcoming project Near Life Experiences, exploring the relationship between humans and fear. This poem is inspired by the fear of growing older, and how society often expects one to look a certain way past a certain age. I took a photo of the view where I wrote this, in Looe Bay. Wisewoman I smile to myself in my pocket mirror, The white roots showing through the dye, Looking about thirty years younger than my age, When I walk, I see the turning of the heads, and of the eyes A mockery for being myself, percieved as fearing old age, There is a difference, between identity and fear, Those cosmetic treatments, of which I worship and pledge to, Turn me from an ageing woman, into a middle aged dear, I see the other women my age, dressing to suit their pension, Why should I follow this, what if I want to carry on my youth, I dress this way, because it is for me, not for any attention, No midlife crisis my friend, here I am, speaking the truth, It is more than possible to look fabulous when you are eighty-two, There should not be an age restriction on clothing, So what, If I am the foxy old lady trying to seduce you, I wish I could look like this forever, with people never knowing, That my age is probably triple of theirs, it is within my charm, Fighting fit, and refusing to fit into a labelled stereotype, To appease the closed minded ideology, society maintains, To give a label to absolutely any woman or man, People can look fabulous when they are young, I think we can also look fabulous when we are older, We can still have our time, we can still have our fun, Age is only a number, we have just grown a little bolder, Pave a way for the younger generation to see they can too, Live life to the full, from the start to the end, You only get one opportunity at this crazy thing called life, So start living, get up to your feet, do not pretend, My skin might be sagging, my body looking skinny and frail, But I can still get away with black boots and a skirt, Permanently stocking up on my make-up, or as I call it, my holy grail, A bit of lipstick and foundation, it will never hurt, I was an energetic lady when I was in my twentys, I am still the one in the group bouncing off the walls, My dangerous exploits, oh there were definitely plenty, I should probably return that toyboys calls, There is nothing wrong about living a life that makes you happy, Ignore the voices that tell you how to look and what to do, No matter what age you are, you can still have fun, Be fabuluous, crazy, energetic and live on the edge until your life is through....
