Funny how little things can remind you of the past - went for our daily constitutional this morning with the dogs - over Hat Hill at Knettishall. A damp dank day and the ground was decidedly mushy. At the top of the hill as we turned down the other side track I was suddenly reminded of a Football match in 1979 at Laarbruch, playing for 1 Sqn against 26. Always a grudge match and I was getting past it even then, so some evil git decided to stick me roughly in the middle of the back four and instructions to patrol everything around the box and centre circle, dont lose the ball, do your world famous offside game and kick anything that moves. It was as well with guys like Tommy Stein RIP in his pomp, 26 were a seriously good team that had swept the league and beaten everyone in sight. A good competitive game ensued with skill on one side being displayed and sheer endeavour on the other. I think we lost 1 - 0 but my memory fails me. The reason why I not remember is because Blue Mills ended my game with one of his delicate interventions as I managed to get somewhere near the 26 box on a rare excursion forward. And what reminded me of that - well like most autumns the reminder of that medial ligament damage tweaks like hell and this morning it tweaked even more sharply than ever, a further reminder, if ever I needed one, of ever encroaching age. So I shall apply the remedy that I have always done, I shall have a small tincture from the Laphroaig bottle tonight and a chuckle
