Futbol Grand Prix tables $1,000,000 prize Kingston,Jamaica; Sixteen teams will compete for what has been dubbed the Freedom Cup and a whopping $1,000,000 cash prize come Monday, July 14. Image One Sports Development will present a compelling beach football format through their summer Futbol Grand Prix Tournament. The competition will follow the FIFA World Cupand will be staged over three invigorating weeks, at the New Barbican Beach with a grand final on Emancipation Day, Friday, August 1. The tournament was launched on Wednesday, June 4 and the atmosphere and excitement generated by the faster paced version of the game already gave those in attendance a heightened sense of excitement. The tournament brings together top players from across the island to test their skill and will to win in a riveting knock out format. With the first match day, immediately following the World Cup final, football fever is expected to be at an all time high and with most of the top leagues locally and internationally on break, this enthralling event will be a great source of fun, excitement, entertainment and socialization. Marsha-Ann Hay, Futbol Grand Prix Project Manager is being coached in passing by CVM TVs Programmes Manager, Ransford Ricketts during the launch of the Futbol Grand Prix Beach Football Tournament at the New Barbican Beach. Looking on are from left; Vin Blaine, JFFs Director of Football, Ray Porter and Anthony Cooke Futbol Grand Prix Tournament Directors, Lorna Lewis Senior Business Development Executive at Power106, Ainsley Lowe, CEO of Image One Jamaica and David Shirley Chairman and Executive Director of Locker Room Sports. Vin Blaine, Director of Football for the Jamaican Football Federation and one of the coaches of the national beach football team was on hand as the guest speaker at the launch and laments the importance of tournaments such as this in developing the sport locally. We have always wanted beach football to become a popular sport and this initiative is welcomed by the JFF in regard to getting it to the level we want it to be. There is a qualifying tournament for CONCACAF coming up in November and this tournament is very timely as it affords the coaches an opportunity to see new players who can then be recruited into the national program. I see this as an integral tournament in generating euphoria and interest around the sport as we seek to get more and more Jamaicans excited about this version of the game, said Blaine. The teams are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks as the pre tournament build-up gains momentum. Following this initial installment the Futbol Grand Prix is expected to become an annual tournament which will eventually expand to attract more teams. Beach football had been played recreationally all over the world for many years and in many different formats until the football association developed specific rules for the sport in 1992. The irregularity of the soft-sand playing surface leads to a completely different style of play, with a greater degree of improvisation needed. The compact pitch, allows players to shoot and score from anywhere on the sand which produces up to sixty (60) shots on goal with an average of eleven (11) goals per game. The inaugural Futbol Grand Prix Tournament was launched on Wednesday, June 04 and kicks off on Monday, July 14, a day after the FIFA World Cup Final. Beach football is the perfect sport which combines skill, agility and shooting on goal as key components, making it one of the most entertaining and action packed events to witness. -End- Click here to view press kit For information contact: Carlette DeLeon (Ms.) Breakthrough Communications 876-929-4048 carlette@breakthroughall
