GOING UNDERGROUND Prohibition has a tendency to breed - TopicsExpress

GOING UNDERGROUND Prohibition has a tendency to breed resistance, defiance and rebellion. If people can’t easily and legally get what they want, they’ll investigate other avenues – legal and illegal. This is the potential route that natural health supplements will go as a result of the draconian Regulations. Demand will generate a phalanx of suppliers who are not particularly concerned with consumer safety and product quality. Contrary to their intentions, the Regulations are likely to spawn a new generation of ‘cowboys’ in the industry and an escalation in irresponsible and questionable behaviour,” warns HPA Chairman, Norman Fels. “Evidence of this is already emerging, as some retailers are openly acting in defiance of the Regulations and an increasing number of manufacturers are ‘going underground’ and producing in facilities that have inadequate GMP standards. The HPA finds this trend very disturbing.” Having worked for decades to protect and promote the industry, as well as advocating relentlessly for CAMs-appropriate regulations, the HPA is extremely concerned that the Government’s lack of foresight and insight will have an effect on the industry that is totally counterproductive to its original intentions.
