GRAFTON SERVICES SWIM CLUB NEWS Nominations for competition - TopicsExpress

GRAFTON SERVICES SWIM CLUB NEWS Nominations for competition have increased slightly over the past few weeks, an indication that some members of the GDSC Swimming Club are coming out of hibernation in readiness for the summer season. With carnivals allocated for October and November, those that are just a little serious about their performances are putting in the hard yards. Despite the handicapping system, the same old faces seem to be on the blocks for the finals. This weeks 25m final was no different with Terry Marsh, Bruce Durrington, Damien O’Mahony, Wilson Burns and Debbie Smith facing the starter. Wilson, still fresh from his holiday, beat his opposition home by a good two seconds and was disqualified. Marshy who is reaping the benefits of a little training, was given the win, just ahead of Durro and Marno. David Moon, Doug Ensbey, Tyler and Bruce Durrington and Matt Thompson were called for the 50m final. Doug was first away on handicap and the next three swimmers dived in, almost in unison. Two seconds later, David took chase. As all five contestants completed the last 10 metres, the judge had his eye glued to the water, as there was only a minute’ distance between the five. David, Bruce then Doug, was the order called by the judge, however Moony had broken his time, so Durro sneaked in to take the win and young Matt upstaged Doug to take second place. It was good to see two ladies in the final of the B B & B. Jenny (the coolest Nan) Vickery and Anne Simkus were up against Bob Owen, Warren Steele and Bruce Durrington. Jenny, trying a newly developed style of backstroke, just blew the rest of the field away and her nearest competitor was Bob. Unfortunately these two received “D’s”. Warren stole the win, just .02 ahead of Durro, with Anne taking third place. A great effort by Bruce, three finals with a win and two seconds, and also one of the first to hand in his raffle tickets.
