GULL COTTAGE NETWORK: RETRO SUNDAYS BURIED TREASURES: A PRAYER FOR THE DYING by CEJ (orig. posting 4/14/12) 3 years ago our intent was to seed the beginnings of a mini network / film reference library. Our online TV network launches in approx. 12 months. But the library part has grown to such a degree we can now post retrospective catalogs of material. Today we focus on our review / essays (which some have called an entire semester of film school in 2 to 3 pages) - referred to as such because while each concerns a PARTICULAR film, they also delve into the films cinematic history (original novels, comic books, earlier films in a series, of its genre, etc.) in order to give it more context. Starring Mickey Rourke, Bob Hoskins, Alan Bates and Liam Neeson, and based on an early novel by the legendary Jack Higgins (THE EAGLE HAS LANDED) A PRAYER FOR THE DYING was originally dissed by critics because of its pulp action angle approach into the Troubles of Northern Ireland. Years later however this same kind of narratively user friendly entrée into discussions on volatile topics would be imitated in films such as PATRIOT GAMES and THE CRYING GAME; now making A PRAYER FOR THE DYING a cutting edge gem of a cult classic. Incl. film clip and excerpts from Bill Contis lush score. - CEJ gullcottageonline/Home_Video_-_March__12.html
