Ga ke duelelwe go go thusa home work! I have been doing random community visits since 2007. My aim has been to interact with the community and get to familiarize myself with lives that different Batswana live, the challenges and opportunities they face as well as coming up with practical ways of overcoming such challenges. I more especially cherish every opportunity I get to seat over tea, a meal and interact with elders and children. On Wednesday, I visited a certain public primary school in a village not far from Gaborone. I was heart broken when the School Head told me that their pass rate was below 50% and that their biggest challenge is that of parents lack of interest in their childrens education! She informed me that one of the standard 7 pupils failed to write 2 of his final Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) because he had no transport money to go to school. When the school authorities went to his home, they found his mother, busying herself with chores and seemingly not bothered by the young student lying down in another room. When the school authorities asked her why she had not made an effort to get her child to school to write his PSLE exams? her response was simply and casually that she was broke and has other stuff to do. WHAAATT??!! This is the worst excuse I have ever heard! To me it doesnt matter whether you are rich or poor, employed or unemployed, educated or illiterate, but as long as you are able bodied as a parent you should put in an effort to ensure your child gets an opportunity at education! More over, she could have approached the teachers to ask for their financial assistance. I really dont get how somebody JUST DOESNT CARE?? Ao Botsadi a re itekeng! This seems to be a major problem in more especially villages. Parents are simply not interested in taking part in their childs education. Some do not even attend PTA meetings. I hear batsadi ba bangwe ga ba thuse bana di home-work ba re ga re duelelwe go dira home-work....yet ha ngwana a sa dire sente re a re ke sekolo kana barutabana ba ba phoso. We need to also be accountable! Thuto ya bana e a tshwaraganelwa betsho. Ga o motsadi yo o nang le boikarabelo ha o sa kgathale ka thuto ya ngwana ya gago. Kgetse ya tsie e kgonwa ke go tshwaraganelwa mme ebile setshwarwa ke ntsha pedi ga se thata.
