George Washington, during his farewell address said, And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience, forbids us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. Translation: ...apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 This month we will celebrate the Independence of the United States of America. This is no small thing. It is not something we did on our own. America had a powerful ally in the God who delighted to be worshiped in spirit and in truth. I will not use this space to express fully my opinion as to a coarsening of the character of America. I will use it to assure you, our partners and God Himself, that we at the Mission have come into agreement with the founding fathers and with the word of God. We cannot accomplish anything of lasting value and importance without Him. It is in the Lord that our fruit is found. It is not enough to encourage sobriety in our clients. It is not nearly enough to attack poverty in our community. We must be the agents of the Gospel working in alliance with the Holy Spirit to offer a genuine opportunity for transformation, of new creation. It is salvation that makes firm a persons ankles where by they may stand and with them the Nation may stand. This Independence Day let us offer a prayer for our country, our neighbors and ourselves with gratitude to all those brave souls whose sacrifices have kept us safe and to the God who remains committed to a covenant relationship with us. May your holiday be a safe and meaningful one; thoughtful and grateful. May we all agree to bless those men and women who have served our Nation and those who are even now in her service. Rev.
