Get a wriggle on??…Mark Burroughs misheard! He thought he was being asked to become the next Yellow Wiggle! He was actually being asked to be a Yellow Wriggle, and assist students from Waihi Central School in New Zealand who were worm seeding on the TSF 1A embankment at Newmonts Waihi site. Worm seeding? Worms are vital for healthy soil. They promote soil structure and aerate the soil. Their droppings (called vermicast) are a great fertiliser. We have lots of worms on site, but freshly spread topsoil doesnt have many. Enter Waihi Central students who helped to spread worms on the embankment and learned a lot of biology along the way. They don’t actually spread the worms, rather, they gather freshly dug sods of earth from worm rich areas and place these on the embankment. The worms quickly move out of the sods and colonise the newly spread topsoil. Thanks for all your help Waihi Central School students!
