Gluten free diet and endometriosis The relationship between diet - TopicsExpress

Gluten free diet and endometriosis The relationship between diet and endometriosis has become a topic of interest again amongst researchers. One large study found a relationship between diet and endometriosis in that following a gluten-free diet for at least 12 months relieved period pain and abdominal pain not related to periods in 75% of women with endometriosis, while the pain didn’t worse during these 12 months for anybody in this study. The researchers concluded that there was a definite link between diet and endometriosis, and that women with endometriosis would benefit from following a gluten free diet. (1). The exact link for this is not yet fully understood, but it is hypothesized that gluten can trigger inflammation in the digestive tract in those who are sensitive or (mildly) intolerant towards gluten. This inflammation triggers the release of inflammatory substances which in their turn can aggravate endometriosis. Reducing inflammation by following a gluten free diet can thus improve endometriosis. Gluten is found in wheat, oats, barley and rye. These grains are commonly used in bread, cereals, pasta, crackers, biscuits, cakes, baked goods etc. Alternative grains that are often better tolerated include millet, corn, rice, amaranth, quinoa and buckwheat. It is worthwhile going on a gluten free diet for a couple of months and see if your endometriosis improves.
