To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 KJV) Timing is important. All the experiences listed in these verses are appropriate at certain times. The secrets to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate Gods perfect timing. The danger is to doubt or resent Gods timing. This can lead to despair, rebellion, or moving ahead without his advice. When is the time for hating? We shouldnt hate evil people, but we should hate what they do. We should also hate it when people are mistreated, when children are starving, and when God is being dishonored. In addition, we must hate the sin in our our own lives... this is Gods attitude. Solomon reflects on several apparent contradictions in Gods control of the world: (1) There is evil and corruption where there should be justice; (2) people created in Gods image die just like the animals; (3) no one comforts the oppressed; (4) many people are motivated by envy; (5) people are alone; and (6) recognition for accomplishments is temporary. It is easy to use such contradictions as excuses to not believe in God. But Solomon used them to show how we can honestly look at lifes problems and still keep our faith. This life is not all there is, yet even in this life we should not pass judgement on God because we dont know everything. Gods plan is for us to live forever with him. So live with eternal values in view, realizing that all contradictions will one day be cleared up by the Creator himself. Tyndale
