Gobble Tournament: Skokie Flyers Squirt 2 battle to a tie with the Niles Rangers. In an exhausting game, the Squirt 2 Flyers battled with the Niles Rangers to a 1-1 tie in the final minutes of the game. After a see-saw battle throughout the first period, the Rangers finally got one on the Flyers goal even though the Flyers heavily out shot the Rangers. The two teams defensive lines proving to be more than a match for the opposing offensive lines. The game remained frozen as both sides exhausted themselves in an end-to-end battle that remained in the Rangers favor until the last minute and a half of the third period when the Flyers stripped the puck from a Ranger break away battled it back ice and very simply, refused , to be denied and not score. Repeated Flyers strikes on the Niles goalie were deflected but not stuffed so the fight around the Niles goal raged until much of both teams were knocked down, including the Ranger goalie. Then, the crowd was treated to a surreal event. The puck, coming from somewhere, magically appeared behind the Rangers laid out goalie and was wheeling along the crease like a lost hub cap, wobbling exactly along the length of the goal line completely untouched but neither going in nor going away from the goal. Everyone held their breath in disbelief. Finally, two hockey sticks, one a Flyer twig and the other a Niles tender paddle swatted out at the same time from prone players, and hitting each other they cancelled ones anothers original intent but together pushed the indecisive puck into the goal. Flyers score. Tie game. The Rangers did not settle. They fought furiously from the next puck drop and put two shots onto the Flyers goal. But the Flyer tender held out like a stone wall and denied them a victory. Both teams celebrated the tie like a victory and the fans filing out into the Iceland lobby uniformly told one another - that was a heck of a hockey game, wasnt it?
