“God knows my heart” … I hear it often from people. What does that mean, exactly? There are several ways this can be meant. Some folks mean... God knows my good intentions, that I try to learn from my mistakes and improve myself”. I’m realizing that many churchgoers, who have been told repeatedly that they cannot be saved by good works, turn to the next best thing they can think of – their “good heart” . They know full well they live lives disobeying God, but they believe God looks past their sins to their good intentions!! Some people use it to mean I know what I should be doing and want to do it but there is something I would rather do instead. This might be something like going to a concert instead of Bible study. Or, I know I should witness to my neighbor, but Im scared. God knows my heart. Ill pray for Jane, and God will send someone else. To know to do right and do wrong anyway is sin. Specifically, it is willful sin and not a sin of ignorance. God knows our heart better than we do. God knows the parts of our heart that we dare not explore. He knows our fears and our weaknesses, yet He pushes us to move beyond them because it will be so much better for us. We will become better people by obeying God. We start down the slippery slope when we ignore God. Not obeying is disobedience. We know from Scripture that without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6). Faith in the heart is no good without actions backing it up. If you dont live and act different because of Jesus in your heart, are you really different? What if Peter had stayed in the boat when Jesus called him to walk on the water? He had to act for his faith to be counted as righteousness. Yes, he sank eventually, but he still stepped out. The other disciples were in the boat saying, He knows my heart. Peters testimony that night is I obeyed. I forgot to keep my eyes on Jesus, but I obeyed. The others dont have that. Their testimony is we watched Peter obey. Obedience brings to us Gods blessing. And God will keep pushing you in faith; each time the task is a little harder or more important. But you know you can do it because God has prepared you with the little things. This is part of the refining process that God uses to make us better Christians and better people. He doesnt want sin and disobedience to keep you down. His plan is to break you of sinful habits. He wants to build you up and make you soar. But He cant do that as long as you use the excuse God knows my heart. GOD does indeed know your heart. Thats why He wants you to stop that lame excuse and obey Him!!
