‘Goliyon ki raas leela –RAMLEELA’ explodes with passion – READ THE FULL REVIEW! Fasten your bullet-proof jackets. Alert your sensory weaponry (sights and sounds) and get set to witness Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s masterful portrayal of Romeo Juliet, set in the royal richness of Gujarat. With guns and golis, six-packs and cholis. It’s a battle for blood, power, honour – and above all love – that’s ultimate, undying, all-consuming. Ramleela’s epic love story erupts in the backdrop of warring clans of Sanada and Rajadi. In a land where mardangi is measured with guns and gussa, Ram (Rajadi) causes a ‘tattad-flutter’ amongst the choris-in backless-cholis with his greased and gorgeous bod, paani-pistols, and flighty flirtatious heart. He meets his ravishing Leela (Sanada) – with ‘jigar and figure’ packed in one deadly package. Their passion-play flares from first sight, with tender lip-locks, poetic riddles and rambles that soon turn into a love that’s fierce, lustful, longing and simply volatile. Even as the centuries-old family feud thunders with hostility, Ram and Leela’s passion triggers more fire than lethal gunpower. Bhansali’s ‘Ramleela’ is a spectacular vision, where every frame is a hand-crafted piece of art. The colours spill onto the canvas, bleeding and blending with the raging emotions of romantic warfare. In the second half, the story loses pace in parts and could do with some trimming. ‘Lahu muh lag gaya’ and ‘Nagada dhol baaje’ are beautifully picturized. Of course, Ranveer and Deepika’s fabulous flair for dance adds to the visual tapestry. The production design, cinematography (Ravi Varman) and costumes are superlative - a perfect fit to Bhansali’s ensemble. Ranveer is sure to give the tops guns of Bollywood plenty of heat (read: competition) with his terrific act. This is his best shot so far; he’s fierce, fearless and unbelievably intense. Deepika, as the feisty firebrand, blows your senses, even without firing golis, apart from looking resplendent in every frame. A special mention for Supriya Pathak Kapur (as Baa), who is as much the star of the film as R & L, with the best-written role to boast of. Richa Chadda and Barkha Bisht add tremendous power to this raas-leela. Above all, what stands out is Ranveer and Deepika’s chemistry, warming up the screen like a crackling bonfire. The best we have seen in recent times. Catch this desi ‘Romeo & Juliet’, exploding with passion and poetry. This is Bhansali’s bouquet of ‘guns & roses’.
