Good Friday Morning everyone at least it is for me yaay, today Im going to talk a lil bit about Thanksgiving. We were all taught that Thanksgiving was first celebrated by the separatists or as we know them the Pilgrims, at Plymouth Massachusetts in 1621. But they really didnt think of it as such. It was the end of growing season and a harvest festival was thrown to celebrate. A large group of Wampanoog Indians showed up with five deer, an they all had a 3 day party, eating, shooting off guns just havin a good time. The idea of Thanksgiving didnt start to be recognized until the 18th & 19th centuries, then people looked back to that 1621 bash to give the holiday some standing. Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until 1682 & then by state & church. During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the start of Thanksgiving proclamations. As President Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide Thanksgiving celebration in America marking Nov. 26, 1789 as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God But Thanksgiving was observed on various dates throughout history from state to state. The final Thursday in Nov. had become customary by the beginning of the 19th century. It was celebrated on the same date by all in 1863 by a presidential proclamation of Abraham Lincoln in an attempt to bring about a sense of unity between the Northern & Southern states, because of the civil war. But the Confederate States did not recognize this until after Reconstruction was complete in the 1870s. Im sure by now you are saying But Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday not the last, well you can thank President Franklin Roosevelt for that, on Dec. 26, 1941 he signed a joint resolution of Congress changing the day to the fourth Thursday of Nov. Can you guess why, well Ill tell ya, it was to boost the economy, giving people a full month to shop before Christmas Day. So there you go some history of Thanksgiving. No matter how it came about, use this day to be with the ones you love, to give thanks for the blessings in your life and to help those less fortunate than you. I think President Washington said it best acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God Have a great Thanksgiving everyone. :)
