Good Morning Good morning. It’s a new day! I bike to work, but my biking skill is poor. As I strain and sweat, someone would casually and leisurely overtake me. When I look at the ease with which they bike, I often thought something was wrong with my bike. So you can imagine my joy the day I rode past someone while climbing a hill; in fact I felt like a Tour de France champion but the joy was short-lived because when I looked back to see whom I overtook, it was an old lady, not only that but before I was done with glancing back at her, she was almost level with me. You see, because of my poor biking skill, I started measuring my progress by the speed of other people, even if they are retired old ladies. You should not measure your success by another person’s speed or progress. If you do, either way, you are bound to run into deception. Either (1) you would have a false sense of satisfaction on your progress because you would think that since others are ‘behind’, you must really be an achiever. This is not always the case. Overtaking a parked or faulty vehicle does not mean your car is fantastic and a great runner. Or (2) you might be disillusioned thinking every other person is ahead of you. This may make you lose hope, become bitter, competitive and antagonistic towards others. But the only person you should compete with is yourself! It is good to look sideways to see what others are doing but don’t let it control your run. Move at your own pace; just be consistent and true to yourself. It is good to let other people’s progress motivate you but don’t be tied up to it. Be your unique self. Count your blessing and see that you are neither empty nor denied, after all if you look back enough, you may something that was close to killing you but you are still here. So be grateful for the little mercies. Be yourself today, don’t lie to yourself, and don’t pretend to be who you are not. It takes more effort to tell lies and to live a lie; channel those efforts to something more profitable and praiseworthy. Stay the course; you will make! It’s a good morning; have a good day!
