Good morning! What a Saturday weve got planned! We have two workshops happening today: Fossil Making in the morning, then learn all about genealogy and create a Family Tree this afternoon. Today is also the return of our Kids on the Block puppet show at 3pm! Plus: a special morning Camera Obscura show and afternoon Open Art Studio. Read on for all the info and times: The Eyeball Show | 11am Learn all about the human eye, bouncing light and antique cameras. Well use our unique periscopic Camera Obscura (Latin for dark room) to take you on a visual tour of Portlands city and seascape - all while pretending to be in a giant eyeball! Free with admission. Fossil Making Workshop (R$) | 11:30am Check out some real and replica fossils from plants and dinosaurs as inspiration to make your own faux fossil. Well talk about how fossils are made then make realistic models from natural sculpture materials like clay and plaster. Take your fossil home and add it to your rock collection or place it outside to watch it return to nature. Best for ages 4+. Please allow 1 hour for fossil to set. $5 per fossil for members, $6 per fossil plus admission for visitors. For tickets call 828-1234 x231 or stop by the front desk. Open Art Studio | 2-3pm The art studio is open! The studio offers an art-making opportunity that explores art concepts, materials and techniques. An arts educator will help kids and grown-ups create using a variety of materials like paint, recycled sculpture materials, drawing tools, collage or clay. Free with admission. Kids on the Block | 3pm Our troupe of life-size educational puppets is back with real stories just like real kids! Kids on the Block is a nation-wide program using Bunraku puppetry as a way to break down boundaries and accept individual differences. For more information, call 828-1234 x 247. Free with admission. Family Tree Art and Genealogy Workshop (R$) | 3:30-4:30pm Do you have a family tree? We may not all have one hanging on our wall, but we all have the history to make one. In this hour workshop family units are invited to create their own tree art on canvas and transform it into a genealogical map dating as recent or as distant as you choose. This workshop aims to connect families with our pasts, give children a sense of history, and provide context to understand the world. As all trees are different, so are family structures. We will strive to creatively cater to individuality. Participants are asked to come with very basic knowledge of your familys genealogy (a child, a guardian and even a pet is enough!). $15/member family, $16/visitor family. For tickets call 828-1234 x231 or stop by the front desk.
