Good morning fb family. ...Some of you may know that I have suffered with back problems for many years (17) to be exact resulting in spinal surgery in 2010 following a diagnosis of Degenerative Disc Disease. Having this condition means that I battle with involuntary muscle spasms, chronic and debilitating pain, nerve and muscular problems, which inevitably affects my quality of life thoughts, feelings and emotions. Despite this I have continued to live life, work and be the best that I can be with my disability or limitation. The reason for posting this is because I am currently in St Thomass Hospital on a Pain Management Programme to support me with accepting and living with my condition. The programme is a residential one and lasts for 4 weeks I have been here for a week now and to begin with I thought here we go and approached the programme with some cynicism. A week later I have found the programme difficult and extremely challenging because it not only deals with the physical aspects of my condition but also the psychological ones too!! I am now in a position where I am being challenged to retrain my brain e.g. my thoughts, feelings, emotions and learning how to connect these to my symptoms. This may sound easy to you all. ..but the mind is a powerful thing. One of the things I was asked to do was to sit with my eyes closed and focus on a particular object. I was then asked to make a mental note of how many times I was distracted by other thoughts, what those thoughts were and what physical changes occurred in my body with each thought. Needless to say I was shocked by the results. This exercise highlighted my inability to concentrate and focus on one thing without being distracted. I was also surprised at the physical symptoms that occurred in my body as each thought came to mind. ..... In conclusion this process has confirmed that CHANGE is possible but starts with transforming the mind. Our thoughts feelings and physical state act as barriers to change. To achieve beneficial change you have to learn to acknowledge all of your thoughts and feelings, putting them in a box or shutting them away does not work. By acknowledging them you will start to recognise unhelpful patterns, thoughts feelings, emotions and judgements. Once achieved you will be able to sit with the discomfort that they bring without reacting or responding.
