Governors School leaves an impression not only on those who - TopicsExpress

Governors School leaves an impression not only on those who attend, but also those who have yet to experience it. Following are thoughts from one young student, Meghan Newman, who was so inspired by her brothers GS experience that she raised $1,000 to provide scholarships to two future GS students! Thank you, Meghan! --- I learned about this wonderful school because my brother Matthew attended GS in English during the summer of 2013—and the experience transformed him. He still talks about it two years later! The more we talked and he shared his stories, the more I understood. Matthew explained that there was no testing or grading at the school. You are encouraged to go outside of your comfort zone and learn and grow without being distracted by the pressures that come with being judged by a standardized test. This intrigued me. It always feels like our education system focuses on the critical importance of grades, and NOT learning. At this school he made memories inside and out of the classroom that would last him a lifetime. Many of those memories include kids that he now considers his closest friends. To this day, they still travel hundreds of miles to see each other. He told me Governor School was one of the best experiences of his life. Unfortunately, ever since a student tuition fee of $500 was put into place due to the budget cuts, some kids who really deserve to attend this amazing school have not been able to accept because their school district could not pay the fee and they and their parents could not afford the tuition. I decided I had to do something to help. I decided I would raise money for two scholarships. My goal was to raise $1000—enough to cover tuition for two kids who could not afford to go. I set up a website. I called friends and family. I knocked on doors. I shared my hopes of raising enough money to create two scholarships to everyone I met. My efforts didn’t go unrewarded. I raised a little over $1,000, and have donated it to the NC Governor’s School Foundation, which provides need-based tuition scholarships to students selected to attend Governor’s School. It felt great knowing I had made a difference and was helping change the lives of two special kids. I hope that what I have done inspires others including Governor’s School alumni of all ages. I hope I can be an example of what can be accomplished when one simply decides and commits. Every small contribution helps. Your donations to GSF are not just for scholarships, but also support annual grants to each campus for special speakers and educational programs that enhance the fantastic GS experience my brother enjoyed. Knowing I had helped made a really big impact on my life. I believe it can do the same for others. Governor School is an amazing school, and deserves all of our love and support.
