Gratitude -- Tuesday, December 16th 1. For my husband, who sweetly endures all of this Christmas-ness. Every year, I swear that Im going to be calmer, more organized and relaxed during the holiday season Every year, I fail. Im far better at whipping up the holidays than I used to be, but still. Theres some sort of messianic meltdown here on my part, usually by mid-December. Yet, he stays the course with me. He comforts me, and offers me kindness, and tells me that I make this time magical for our children -- and for him, too. Is it cheesy to say hes the best gift Ive ever been given? Yes. Dont care. Im a very, very lucky girl. 2. For a passage in an essay I read last night, which resonated with me while I was feeling particularly frazzled, unproductive, stuck and vulnerable (who wants Baileys?): If you want to be the type of person who accomplishes things on a consistent basis, then give yourself a schedule to follow -- not a deadline to race towards. Simple daily practice is everything, without expectation of result. That lesson is so often laid before me. When will I finally learn it? Forehead smack. Im grateful for the universes patience to offer repeat classes in sanity in its course offerings, year after year. 3. For this song, played at this performance. I was a year old, and I swear I was bopping to Levon Helms backbeat a few miles away from the Brooklyn Academy of Music when The Band was there, performing on New Years Eve 1971. You gotta love a guy who tells the horn section to take a bow before he takes one himself. Another lesson from the Universe. OK, OK. Im listening.
