Gratitude Day 30 Evolution: Dont worry Im not going to get all Darwinian here talking about monkeys being our great, great, great great, great grandparents. I am talking about all of the changes that take place in the World of our lifetimes, how many things come and go, how the world itself changes and how we change as we travel in this journey of life. I can remember my grandparents talking about a time before planes, when there was one phone that people would walk a block to use, getting their first radio and then much later their first black and white TV, transitioning from their Ice Box to their first refrigerator. I would look at them all wide eyed like they were some kind of aliens. They would go on and on about their first Model T scaring the horses off the road, the first time they tasted margarine and the prices.......It seems like when they were younger everything cost a penny and nothing was more than a nickle. Cut to my current memories now that I am closer to my grandparents age than Id like to be. I remember vinyl records, penny bubble gum, 10 cent cokes (youd return the bottle for 3 cents back), Three channels on TV (NBC, CBS, ABC), Rotary Phones, Drive In Movies, Commercials being at the beginning and end of shows, watching THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY with my family every Sunday night (Walt Disney himself would introduce the show), The soda shop at the Pharmacy, The Varsity where car hops would bring your Hot Dogs and Onion Rings on a tray that hung from the open window in your car. Buying Groceries from the Grocery store and getting fruits and Vegetables from the Fruit Stand on the corner. I didnt get my first computer till the mid nineties didnt understand it till the late nineties. How things have changed since the 60s.........many things for the better some for the worse. One thing is true evolution keeps going the world changes and we adapt and change with it. In some ways my kids are just like I was full of wonder, discovery, mischief and all of those other elements that make a kid a kid. But the tools, the ways to explore, the variety, the awareness, the exposure, the opportunity for all the good and all the bad are there for them waiting for their evolution to move forward as they navigate the stages of their lives. As a parent it is overwhelming at times hoping for them to glean and take advantage of all that is offered while at the same time preparing them for the underside of it all that they are blissfully unaware of. The world keeps changing and we keep evolving with it trying to hold onto the beauty of the past and the promise of the future. with Lisa Campbell McCorkle
