GreenAP ARKITIPS #018 - Rated PG: Practical Green: Water: Water Heaters - Generating hot water can be sustainable by either saving water or electricity. There are three possible efficient ways to produce hot water: (1) tankless water heaters - heat water by electricity or gas and installed adjacent to the shower or lavatory. There is minimum waiting time so less water is wasted while waiting for water to heat up. (2) hot water recirculating systems - the hot water is provided by a loop piping from the source of hot water (which may use electricity, gas or solar) to the fixture. There is minimal waiting time, therefore saving water. (3) heat recovery systems - air conditioners, refrigerators or other appliances with compressors expel heat and this heat could be utilized to make water hot by running the hot pipes in an insulated water tank.
