Growing up, I had a friend with a very critical father. It didnt matter if she was wearing her hair up or down, straight or curly, in a braid or with a bow. He always had an opinion of how it should look, and it was never the way that it was currently styled. This criticism wasnt isolated to her appearance either. It spilled over into how she played, sang, and completed projects... I didnt get to visit her house often, so I cannot know if this is how it was all the time in her home, but I can say that the times that I did spend there made me nervous. When her dad was home, I was always concerned that maybe he wouldnt approve of how I acted or played. I was far more concerned with not upsetting him than enjoying the time I spent with my friend. Fathers are so important. Often, the views that we hold of our earthly father shape the views of our Heavenly Father. If we have a father who was quick to correct, hard to please, and always critical, it can be easy to view God with similar attributes. It can be hard to understand the love of God and His true character when we filter our views through past experiences and past relationships. But if I may, I want to encourage you today. When we read Gods Word we can understand how He speaks, thinks and loves us. It is through this study of His Word that we can separate how we may have perceived Him from His true character. He is patient. He is kind. He is slow to anger. He is quick to forgive. He keeps no record of wrongs. He is full of joy. He is gentle. He is full of mercy. He encourages. He is full of grace. And most importantly, He loves you just as you are. Can you believe that with me today? His Word will confirm it, and His Spirit will testify that it is true. God loves you, and there is nothing you could do to change His mind.
