Growing up in the country we picked, shelled, froze and canned lots of purplehull peas! One year Peachy planted a hughe garden of peas along with watermelons. So we went to the pea patch and a herd of kids mom and a truck. Chester Russell. JL, William Earl, Todd Russell, Harold Russell, Dell, Me and I dont know who else. Anyway the rule was you had to fill up your 5 gallon bucket before you could leave to go swimming in Grandmas pond. Well it was hot and I was small so it was taking me a long time....Chester and JL finished really fast and left after loading their buckets on the truck. Finally everyone loaded the truck and went to grandmas house and started unloading the truck of buckets at grandmaws when mom grabbed Chesters bucket up like all the rest. Peas arent that heavy so this should have been an easy thing! But it was heavy!!!! So was JLs Those boys had found small water melons and placed them in the bottom of the bucket and covered them with peas so you couldnt see them. Explained how they got finished so fast!!!!
