Guest Post: This covers a full week so is a LONG post. Hello I am Justin’s Aunt and was fortunate enough to spend a week here with Justin. Here is an update of his week: Sunday some Veterans had a car show at the Hospital. Justin liked looking out the window at the hot rods. Monday wasn’t a great day but he got a good night’s sleep and Tuesday was a great day. While his speech is very halted he still managed to say a lot and was very responsive to our questions. He even got very frustrated towards the end of the day as he didn’t like being told what to do. That is great! Getting frustrated takes cognitive effort and is the next stage in TBI healing. Wednesday and Thursday were alike where he did not have a good night’s sleep so the days were not as great as Tuesday. Sleeping patterns are disrupted and is to be expected with TBI. The Doctors are helping him get to sleep with medicine and strict routines with the staff. The best news is on Thursday he got the cast off his right arm! Another step forward in his healing! Friday has been a great day! He got a great night’s sleep and is talkative and remembering well. In physical therapy he stood up for the first time on his one weight-bearing leg! I will leave tomorrow night but I would just like to share that I observed Justin is under the care of a great hospital with a wonderful program. I saw our benevolent Mother persevere to be here early morning and stay after dinner caring for her first grandchild 7 days a week. I saw concerned colleagues and Marine friends and Justin’s commanding officers drive 3 hours one way to visit with him. Justin really lights up when he has visitors. I saw MoM’s send cards daily for encouragement. I saw compassionate and caring nurses/therapists who celebrate every success with us. I saw kindhearted doctors who are open to all of our questions and are generous with their time as they would follow up with information, articles, and publications that helped backup their answers to our questions. I saw support staff like the nursing managers, Dept of Defense liaisons and case workers who genuinely are vested in Justin’s recovery and daily check in on the family to make sure we are okay.
