Gun review!!! This time I will critique the Walther P22. It is an unassuming little pistol on its face, looking very much like other semi-auto .22s. But a little investigating shows some useful differences. One of the first things I noticed when I picked one up is that the magazine release is in the trigger guard, not on the grip like most pistols. At first I thought I would not like this feature, but as I used it I realized that it was actually very well thought out. The user does not need to change their grip to change their magazine (its NOT a clip!) and it is truly ambidextrous. Other positive features of this pistol are the changeable backstrap and the easy to manipulate slide. For people who have reduced grip strength this is an excellent choice. Many who suffer from arthritis are able to use the P22 and are not limited to revolvers. The pistol also comes stock with an extra front sight or, on the models with a fiber optic front sight there are different color inserts. Most models have threaded barrels and some come with the threaded adapter so you can suppress the pistol, making it a pleasure to shoot without any hearing protection. If your pistol didnt come with the adapter they are very reasonably priced and easy to add by the owner. The pistol comes with the wrench to remove the thread protector. No firearm is perfect and this one has a few features that I found less than optimal. They are not deal breakers by any stretch, but this is a review and we will look at the good, the bad and the ugly! The most notable are the take-down and re-assembly procedures. To take the slide of the user must pull down the takedown lever then pull the slide to the rear enough to clear the frame. The slide is then lifted and allowed to travel forward until it is removed from the frame. The complaint here is that the takdown lever is a little tricky to manipulate correctly as the user must squeeze it and in doing so can actually prevent its movement. The assembly process also has a minor issue in that there is a plastic rod that is used to keep the recoil spring in proper position while replacing the slide. This is not as cumbersome as the removal process, but not as easy as some other pistols. All in all, the P22 is a great choice at a very reasonable price. We have 4 models in stock at the moment, so stop in today and check them out!
