HIV PREVALENCE DROPS IN RIVERS STATE Rivers State Government has confirmed a drop in the prevalence rate of HIV AIDS in the State. Health Commissioner Dr. Tamunoiyoriari Parker stated this in a Radio/Television Broadcast to commemorate the 2014 World Aids Day in Port Harcourt, South-South Nigeria. According to him the UNAIDS SPECTRUM Analysis for Rivers State estimates that the current State population prevalence is about 2.93 per cent for the year 2014.” This drop in prevalence is attributable to the various control programmes instituted by the Governor-Amaechi’s led administration” he said. Dr. Parker said the State has acquired a new laboratory machines for CD4 count, chemistry and haematology at the comprehensive treatment sites in order to improve the quality of service delivery, stressing that there are now 303 Primary Health Centres offering Preventing Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) services from initial 15 sites at the advent of this administration. The Commissioner said there are currently 23 Comprehensive Treatment sites in the State as compared to only 6 Comprehensive sites a few years ago. “We have also extensively engaged the Private health sector for PMTCT service delivery in order to create equitable access while at the same time, retaining the socialist nature of HIV service delivery” he said. It would be recalled that the 1st of December each year is set aside to commemorate World Aids Day. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Close the Gap.”
