HONORING TODAY; JAMES WASHINGTON BARBER. Sergeant Co. C 2nd N.Y. Mounted Rifle Volunteers .Enrolled: 22 Dec 1863. Lockport, New York as a Private. Honorably Discharged: 10, Aug 1865, Petersburg, Va. James W. Barber was born 15, March 1839, at Newfane, Niagra, New York. His parents were Richard and Adeline (Holmes) Barber. James Barber married the first time to: Mary J. Swick, on 25 December 1861. Mary died, 19, July 1896, and is buried in Idlewild Cemetery. James Barber married a second time; 17, April, 1901, at Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Viola A. Curtis. Viola had been divorced twice before. Her first marriage was to John Helfrich who she married in 1895, and divorced in 1901. She then married a Henry Curtis in Jackson, Michigan on 24 May 1878, and they divorced 21, October, 1893. Viola’s maiden name was Chapin. Her parents were John L. and Penelope “Nellie” (Belknap) Chapin who are both buried in Idlewild Cemetery. (John L. Chapin; 1825-1899. Nellie: 1834-1875). James Barber had the following children: Lettie born 8, July 1863, and died 27, September 1864. Fred W. born, 9 November 1866, and died 1947. Nettie R. born, 11 February 1866. Adeline or “Addie” E. born, 29 November 1870. Addie married John Fonger. They are both buried in Idlewild Cemetery. Arthur J. born, 26, May 1877 and died 1946. During the winter of 1899, on 17th of December, James Barber sustained an inguinal scrotal hernia after carrying a bag of rye across a field. James Barber died 31, March 1928, his wife Viola had died in 1919, both are buried in Idlewild Cemetery
