HOW DOES THE WORLD APPEAR AND WHAT IS ITS SOLUTION? Pure Consciousness, which is the ultimate Reality, expresses itself first as selfconsciousness, without admitting any medium whatsoever. This is the most immediate of all knowledge and is identical with ‘being’, completely beyond subject-object relationship. This Consciousness seems to degenerate, by appearing to express itself through the mind and senses, as thoughts and perceptions. By accepting the medium of the mind and senses, the appearances – namely thoughts and perceptions – seem to be separate from the Self. This is how the world appears, though in essence it is nothing but the Self. Therefore, the solution of the world does not lie in any objective search outside, by way of the sciences or philosophy, but in withdrawing into the real Self within one. This may successfully be achieved by following the ordinary mental knowledge itself to its very source, through the most immediate expression of knowledge, namely selfconsciousness or objectless knowledge.
