Had a good discussion today about art. It needs rules. Art works best when there are a few constraints on it. Imagine a piece of music that decided not to use notes, just random noises. No one would want to hear it. Imagine a play in which the cast members just spoke random sentences strung together. Imagine a book with no punctuation or grammar or plot or character development. So why should paintings or photography be any different? If its just random blobs of nonsense, it better at least be pleasing to the eye or be creative in some other sense, or perhaps have a story behind it. Otherwise, why should anyone buy your self-indulgent pieces of art?
