Had a middle aged woman referred to me recently with a complex - TopicsExpress

Had a middle aged woman referred to me recently with a complex chronic pain syndrome. Unfortunately I was running behind in my clinic, and she was booked into a 15 minute time slot instead of the typical 45 minutes that I prefer. I started to get flustered, then just took the attitude that Id do the best I could in the time I had, and then I prayed for some help. I walked into the room and within seconds she was in tears recounting being raped around age 13. It was clear to me that she was in it and already associated so I said, Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and feel it for the last time. By the way, when I say that these days, I am so confident in the process that it is almost as if every atom and force in the universe is going to conspire to make that happen. We tapped on her global feeling of overwhelm. Then went to the rape, tapped globally on that, then went back through the story and tapped on the parts and pieces. Lastly we did the change the expressions technique. During the session we went back and forth between the bad memories and and some positive memories, the so called good-bad collapse. I also incorporated some eye movement techniques that Jonah and I have been using with great success. As Robert says, only 5-10% of FasterEFT is in the tapping, the rest is in the set up and process, defractionating, interrupting the pattern, good-bad collapse, etc. The basis of the eye movements is that whereever the eyes move, this activates different parts of the neurology. Generally speaking, when folks feel bad or stuck or depressed, they tend to look down and thus they are activating that part of their nervous system. So part of eye movements involve looking up. A second component involves having the eyes look side to side, as this activates both hemispheres of the brain. Scientifically its much more difficult to feel anxious or depressed if you are looking at any issue through using both hemispheres. Lastly, we add blinking to the equation as this mimics REM sleep and helps to reset the neurology. I want to give credit to Carl Dourish who got me interested in eye movement stuff and teaches his own method called Visual-Release-Tap which I also use. I have studied Carls stuff and done a lot of reading and studying on my own of things like Brainspotting, EMDR, integral eye movement therapy, and come up with a quick modification to use along with FasterEFT. The way we use the eye movements while tapping, especially if the client is stuck (or if I need to work really fast like with the client mentioned above) is this. At each tapping point Ill have them look up and to their left, up and to their right, up and to their left, up and to their right, then blink 5 times. Then go on to the next tapping point. When the clients look up, they are looking at approximately the 10 and 2 oclock positions. This is really powerful at helping break the deeply conditioned neurologic patterns that folks call negative emotions. With the client above, this was powerfully effective. She walked out with a smile on her face and said this was the first time in her life she could think or talk about the rape with no emotional charge and a smile on her face.
