Had some trouble convincing Tiva to settle down and go to bed - TopicsExpress

Had some trouble convincing Tiva to settle down and go to bed tonight, but it was actually kind of awesome. First he managed to figure out how to turn on the bedside light, (which really isnt that easy). I was fighting with him to keep the light turned off, but then I had to take a phone call. He followed me into the kitchen, and opened the fridge and looked through it. He then even got up and peered into the freezer on his tiptoes. He stops and looked at me and announces, Daddy, I want… Something. I said No way man, Im sorry, its really late, and you need to get back to bed. He walks over and opens up the little mini fridge that we use for drinks mostly, and pulls out a half-full squeeze bottle of orange gatorade. Oho! Whats this? he says. I take my phone away from my head and say Not a chance mister and reach for him but he dodges me and goes around the corner. He is nearly at the balcony door when I come around from the kitchen. I take the bottle from him confidently and put it on my high kitchen shelf, and go back to the phone conversation. Soon I hear a dragging sound and all of a sudden a small hand reaches over the counter from the other side and the gatorade disappears and he jumps off the stool. Hold on a sec…. Hey! Tiva! …You give that back mister He cackles as he tries to get away but I pursue diligently and manage to get the bottle back a second time. I quickly put it on top of the fridge, and then continue explaining something over the phone. I pause, and watch with intrigue, as he walks around to the kitchen shelves right beside the fridge. Without hesitation he pulls himself up onto the bottom shelf. On the phone, I interrupt the conversation and start describing what is happening, giving a play-by-play. Wow, he is totally climbing the shelves like a ladder right now. Hes up to the second row already. Ok, hes reaching out, but cant quite get it, he is still too low. Wait, he seems to be re-thinking his approach. Holy crap, he just found a better foothold by the coffee machine and is now up higher than the top of the fridge. I get to the bottle a second or two before he gets it and scoop him up and explain why he cant drink gatorade at nearly 10pm. I end the phone call and take him back to bed. I try to get him to lay down, but he tries to play wrestle and push past me and gets out onto the floor. He somehow finds the life-size extendable red lightsaber that happens to be under my bed. He extends the replica and turns it on. (It also makes pre recorded sound effects when the button is depressed) The room is totally dark except for the red glow off the toy. He plays with it in front of the mirror, waving it around and watching the light it gives off. This is cool, daddy. This is a lightsabre. (I had told him what it was when he found it once before) He pauses, and thinks, while watching his reflection in the mirror and slowly moving the lightsabre around. Daddy what is this for? Ummmm…. well… You see, in the stories of Star Wars, there is a weapon called a lightsabre that can only be used by the Jedis. This is a toy version of that weapon. Daddy, what are Jedis? Uhhhhhhh….. well…. Jedis are kind of like… enlightened warriors, I guess you might say He turns and points the lightsabre directly towards me, but not hitting me. Daddy, we are Jedi he says. So I said, We sure are buddy, and I soon manage to get him to put away the lightsabre and come into the bed. He gets himself comfortable and arranges the blankets how he wants. Daddy, there is a lot of stars he says, in the darkness. You are right Tiva, there are many many stars. He sits up and pulls away the blankets and starts climbing over me again to try and get out of bed. I say Tiva-James, we have a big day tomorrow, going out to visit your Gran-nana, and we really need to get to sleep. He crosses the room and says I know daddy, but I just need to see them. See what? The stars he says and slips easily under the curtains and I hear him climb up on top of the humidifier and scale up and onto the windowsill. I hear him struggle for a moment but then easily open the window out to my balcony. I need to see the city he says. I cross over to him and say Its pretty cloudy tonight, I am not sure we can see the stars. He is staring directly at the city skyline, very intently. He just replies There are so many daddy… So many. I hold him for a minute and gaze at the city with him. Then he says Where do the spaceships come from, Daddy? So I ask What spaceships? Those spaceships, out there. and he looks out over the lake, and gestures with his hand. Can you see spaceships out there? I ask him. Ya. There are spaceships. I think they are going to the spacestation. (I am already a bit tripped-out with this conversation, but I have to ask): Are they traveling to other planets too? Yeaaaah. After the space station, they go back to the other planets. he says Than he turns to me and very soberly and seriously exclaims, Daddy.. in space.. its just crazy. He shakes his head, looking right at me, repeats Its crazy. Then, Can I can go into space, Daddy, with the suits, can I go up there? I say Tiva, it is totally possible that you could go up there if you really wanted to. Daddy, can I be the astronaut-captain? Anything is possible Tiva, That would be a very important and challenging job. Ill try my best to help you achieve any of your goals. You could totally be an astronaut captain.
