Hailstorm damages crops and fruits Budgam, Sep 5: The hailstorm, which occurred in many areas of Central Kashmir’s Budgam and North Kashmir’s Baramulla districts on Wednesday evening has caused extensive damages to the agriculture and horticulture. The hailstorm has damaged crops in scores of villages of Beerwah Budgam and Sonawari Sumbal and has caused panic among the farming community. “Initially the hailstorm occurred in many villages of Charar-e-Sharief Tehsil, however the hamlets of Beerwah particularly at Khanpura, Amandar Chak, Shunglipora, Kokar Bagh, Khag, Pathipora and Sujan and other areas and resulted in massive damage to rice, maize, apple and pear crop,” the locals told CNS. “The crop which was ripe has almost destroyed completely. The villages are already poverty stricken and can’t afford such loss. I appeal to the State Government to provide ex-gratia to the affected farmers and also provide free ration for them,” MLA Beerwah, Dr Muhammad Shafi Wani told CNS. Hailstorm damaged apple trees and crpos in many villages of Sumbal particularly Nesbal, Naninara, Asham, Zaznu, Dingura, Ahan, Wakoora and Batvina. “The paddy seedlings too got damaged in many villages surrounding Charar-i-Sharief,” the residents said. The farmers have appealed to the district administration to assess damage due to hailstorm and have demanded immediate relief for the same. “The government should constitute a committee to assess the loss and provide the compensation to the affected farmers accordingly,” the residents added.
