Happy Birthday, David Connor! Another busy day today, so Im submitting another #BirthdayQuest theme just before the deadline! David is a superstar Bass player that I met in Aspen a few summers ago. There are a number of big-picture musical ideals that we have in common, which is part of why we click so well. Hes spectacular with Classical rep, but hes also incredibly versatile, being able to throw down on a variety of popular styles. Many of you have heard me talk about the important role popular music has played in my musical development; many of the most gifted musicians I know are at home in both the Classical and Popular worlds, and David is certainly one of them. These days, hes playing in one of the best and most vibrant ensembles on the planet, down in sunny Florida! For Davids #BirthdayQuest theme, I pay homage to his versatility by quoting two famous Bass excerpts, one from each side of the musical spectrum. The first comes from one of the great German symphonies, and the second comes from one of the great American musicals. As always, both of these quotes are presented in their original keys, but with different rhythms and surrounding harmonies.
