Happy Birthday today (Oct. 8) to James Johnstone, best known as alto sax & guitar double-threat with UK post-punk band, Pigbag, active from 1980-83; though never hugely commercially successful, Pigbag incorporated elements of punk, jazz, funk, ska, reggae & afrobeat, all accompanied with undeniable pop sensibility, that was influential on others that followed; they scored the 1982 UK #3 single Papas Got A Brand New Pigbag, which became their signature song & is still heard extensively in dance clubs & UK sporting events; their 1982 debut album Dr Heckle & Mr Jive reached UK #18 (& topped the Indie chart); after the comparative failure of 1983 sophomore album Lend An Ear, the group dissolved & James later formed the group Instinct…
