Happy Hanukkah!! Day 3- significance Light of Justice/Peace Judas Maccabeus, also known as THE HAMMER, is symbolic of what the Jewish people were looking for in a savior. Even in Jesus day they waited to see if he would be their Hammer Messiah to defeat the Romans. Ultimately, this it is suspected this is what led Judas Iscariot to betray him because he wanted his Warrior. But this isnt what Jesus taught. As a matter of fact he taught the opposite; Jesus acts of justice involve not only healing the hurting but also confronting those who have been doing the hurting. The powers-that-be retaliate. The religious and political leaders do have a kind of justice on their side-justice in the sense of the self-interests of people in power and their laws and policies that act to sustain their power. Jesus did violate this kind of justice and so retribution by the powers-that-be followed. Justice is behaving according to what is morally right and fair. We are indeed under biblical moral laws as believers. And thus we must act accordingly towards others as Jesus did, as God does. It is interesting with everything going on in the world today with race relations and religious persecution here and around the world how important the meaning of Hanukkah is at its very core meaning! Jesus incarnates Old Testament justice. The prophets preached a message of justice where God enters the brokenness of fallen humanity and brings the possibility of healing-blessing all the families of the earth. Hosea captures the essence of Gods justice when he speaks for God: My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath (Hosea 11:8-9). Gods holiness motivates Gods compassion. God in the midst of Gods people practices compassion not punishment. Certainly we have evidence of other understandings of Gods holiness in the Old Testament. However, for Christians who believe Jesus fulfills the core message of Torah, Hoseas proclamation conveys the most fundamental meaning of Gods holiness. Jesus, now confessed as God incarnate, follows precisely the pattern Hosea presents. We are supposed to be His Kingdom Peacekeepers! :)
