Happy Seven Days of Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba) Day 1, December 26, the principle is: Umoja=(Swahili) unity All black people arent alike. Were not all the same politically, culturally nor when it comes to religion. Malcolm X was highly critical of Dr. Kings non-violent tactics (Gandhi provided the application, Jesus provided the spirit, King often said) Kings philosophy was honed by a history of the southern black church. Malcolm prescribed, by any means necessary, with which many northern non-Christian blacks agreed. However, they both recognized that they were confronting a common enemy--white racism, put simply (albeit expressed through every conceivable institution in America, law enforcement agencies included) Malcolm X came down to Mississippi during the police-spnsored violence of the otherwise peaceful Freedom Summer marches in 1964 to assure Coretta Scott King that he was offering his support to send a message of unity (umoja) It was also a not-so-veiled threat to the Mississippi power structure, saying that if Dr. King failed, then theyd have to contend with him as Kings replacement (similar was the case with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rev. Allan Boesak and Nelson Mandela in South Africa during Apartheid) They didnt agree on many things, but they determined to agree and work together where possible for the greater good of human and civil rights in America. Were all the beneficiaries because of it. Christians who stand for justice (ALL of us) would do well to practice the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace--applied in the very nitty-gritty of the issues of our times, not simply as catechism. Umoja=unity
