Hats - when is it suitable for men not to wear them? Bit of a random question that popped into my mind following a friends throw away comment about the number of men he seen depicted bare headed in illustrations. Given how common hats were it strikes me that there must, therefore, be certain situation when not wearing one was socially acceptable. So Ive done a very quick and dirty image search to see if I could spot any trends - here are some in a Pinterest board. (Ive tried to avoid religious occasions and similar to concentrate on more normal daily life - caveat, this was quick and dirty but kept to C15th) pinterest/nikgaukroger/men-without-hats/ Looks like servants and executioners score high on the not wearing a hat stakes. Mildly amused by the hat seller not wearing a hat :-) Apologies to women for only considering men.
