Have enjoyed seeing how much symbolic meaning I could find in an orange today at the All Saints Whitstable Christingle service. After 20 years of doing these talks I went a little bit deeper into the anatomy of an orange and said 1) That the orange is like people in that it has a hard peel or outer surface but is soft on the inside. Its therefore like the people of the world it represents. 2) When you take an orange to pieces you discover it is divided into different segments which all look similar. As the orange represents the world the different segments represent different people groups (white, black, oriental, Asian, etc) which though appearing different are actually very similar in reality in that we are all human beings sharing the same planet and with similar needs. The orange therefore represents our common humanity. I took the orange apart to show this! 3) I then took another orange and cut it in half and started juicing it in a manual juicer. Ok here I was stretching the analogy but I think the parents enjoyed the humour. Sometimes in life we go through the wringer and are under huge pressure but at times like this we can produce the best - the real juice which enriches all of life. The world when put under strain often finds it shows its best side Groan you may think but it was good fun. I then got onto more traditional subjects such as Jesus Light of the World, the Blood of Christ and the fruit of the Spirit. So it did have a Christian message! Was fun and a good congregation too!
