Have you ever wondered what Newfound Gap road looked like before it was paved and had hundreds of cars on it daily? Several lesser traveled roads in the park offer visitors the chance to experience the rugged terrain. Balsam Mountain Road, Parson Branch Road, Greenbrier Road are a few of the gravel, dirt roads in the park. When taking any of these roads, plan ahead and allow for several hours as the travel is slow going. If you are more comfortable with paved roads, then start early or stay late and you may find some solitude. Photos by Sam Hobbs, Kristina Plaas, and NPS files.
