Haven’t posted in a while, or so it seems. So today I want to share a real gem. A brief movie of the filming of the Circus Parade down Main Street in 1951 for the movie “The Greatest Show on Earth”. It’s a little rough around the edges but it’s still interesting to watch the actual parade being filmed. It’s another piece of the story. This is how Florida History Network describes that day in history: “January 30, 1951, Production begins in Sarasota for “Greatest Show on Earth”. Hollywood stars, stunt workers and production crews converged on The Ringling Brothers Circus Winter Quarters in Sarasota to film scenes for Cecil B. DeMilles opus, The Greatest Show on Earth. An account in the Sarasota Herald Tribune describes the staunch test of courage required of stars Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde as they rehearsed trapeze acrobatics. Boy its high up here, and am I scared, Betty shouted to the crew below before nailing the stunt and spreading grateful hugs. Hundreds of Sarasota residents were employed as extras. In addition to Hutton and Wilde, the movie starred Charlton Heston, James Stewart and Dorothy Lamour. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture.” Read two stories in the Sarasota Herald Tribune: Betty Flies Through the Air -- Handsomely (news.google/newspapers?id=WiEhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=sGQEAAAAIBAJ&pg=1888%2C3663867) and 2 More Movie Stars Arrive; Cameras Grind (news.google/newspapers?id=WyEhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=sGQEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5945%2C3760099)
