Previous Next Comments (0) ITS business as usual for the team at Grimsby Family Golf Centre – who are determined to let customers old and new know the course is open, despite the major works being done at the neighbouring leisure centre. Manager Dayne Hawkins and his wife Marion said they have been left struggling to cope as a result of nearby construction work at the Cromwell Road leisure centre. Since work began the couple have seen a dramatic fall in trade and now they are desperate to reinforce the message that business is open as usual. Mr Hawkins said the centre is one of the largest of its kind in the county, giving people of all ages and backgrounds the chance to try their hand at the strangely addictive sport. He said: We have been massively affected because people dont think we are open anymore. Footfall in the shop has dropped dramatically. We have been battered left, right and centre. We believe we are doing a big service to the local golfing community. As reported, the construction work at Grimsby Leisure Centre started in June. Since then, Mr and Mrs Hawkins claim the construction hoardings have been obstructing the view of the business. They also believe signs which have been erected in order to inform passersby that the business is still open are inadequate. He said: We at the golf centre are right behind the leisure centre, we back it 100 per cent, but it is massively disrupting our business. If you are a new customer and you dont know where we are based, you actually have to drive past us to see us in the first place. Trade has fallen dramatically and we really are struggling to cope. We have been trying to let people know we are still open via social media. The golf centre is open 365 days a year and never closes, whatever the weather. The centre also runs a successful junior course, with some of its members playing in the Lee Westwood tour. Mrs Hawkins added: I think we will be OK again after the winter months and people realise that we are still here. We are probably the largest golfing outlet in the region and everyone is welcome here – there is no stigma and its golf for everybody. Councillor Mick Burnett, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: North East Lincolnshire Council and Cofely have been working closely with our contractor, Interserve Construction Ltd, since the start of the project, consulting and giving due consideration to the needs of the golf club. This has been an important part of the project plan. We have met with the owners of the club on a number of occasions to discuss their issues. As a result of those meetings we have taken action by amending the access road to the site. We have also provided signage and arrows to the club on the site hoardings, which lets the public know that it is still open for business as usual. As the new leisure centre is developed, the site hoarding is essential to safeguard members of the public and to restrict access to what is a potentially dangerous working area.
