Haverhill Blackjacks picked up their fourth consecutive win at the expense of Herts Eagles, although the game had a nail biting finish. The first three Herts batters were retired, pitcher Jerred Estenson, catcher Matt Schellhaas and centre fielder Paul Warner scoring for the Blackjacks, thanks to runs batted in from Schellhaas’ double and left fielder Chris Highland’s triple, to give them an early 3-0 lead. Three strikeouts by Estenson, the last with bases loaded, ensured that the Eagles remained score less into the bottom of the second inning, although Haverhill weren’t able to add to their run total either. Two runs were notched up by Herts in the top of the third inning, second baseman Duncan Hoyle and pitcher Antony McDowell coming in, although three more strikeouts for Estenson eventually retired the side; Warner and short stop Tommy Opal scored for the hosts in the bottom of the inning to give them a 5-2 advantage. Third baseman Tom Kosak scored for Herts in the fourth inning to make it 5-3, Estenson, first baseman Steven Phillips and Schellhaas scoring, Estenson thanks to Warner’s hit, to leave them on top 8-3. Two more strikeouts for Estenson helped the Blackjacks to leave their opponents score less in the fifth inning; unfortunately the hits and runs started to dry up for Haverhill and they wouldn’t score another run for the rest of the game. Left fielder Mike Cresswell, Hoyle and McDowell scored for the Eagles at the top of the sixth inning to close the gap to just 2 runs; Hoyle then scored in the seventh inning to leave them a single run behind with the score at 8-7. Relief pitcher Pflugh managed to finish the job that Estenson started as, in the top of the 9th inning, two outs were secured before a good throw by Rob Wood from third base beat the runner and meant Phillips took the ball and ended the game.
