High temperatures this afternoon will reach well into the 90s across most locations. This heat combined with high humidity will result in heat index values near or just above 100 degrees this afternoon. ...Heat Advisory Remains in Effect Until 8 pm EDT This Evening... * Locations: Most of the lower elevations across southern New England away from the immediate south coast, Cape Cod and the islands. * Heat Index Values: Near or just above 100 degrees this afternoon. * Timing: The worst of the heat and humidity will occur between 1 pm and 6 pm EDT. * Impacts: Persons outdoors for prolonged periods of time on Independence Day could be more susceptible to heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun when possible. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Avoid prolonged work in the sun or in poorly ventilated areas. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned environment, stay out of the sun, and check in on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 9-1-1.
