Heath firefighters to get raises The Heath City Council on Monday approved a three-year contract with its firefighters union, which also voted to accept the agreement. The International Association of Firefighters Local 2930 accepted the collective bargaining agreement, and the council voted unanimously to authorize the mayor to sign it. The agreement, retroactive to April 17, increases firefighter salaries by 0.5 percent the first year, 1.25 percent the second year, and 1 percent in the third year. Mayor Mark Johns said that, when pension pick up, medic incentive and other benefits are included, the agreement provides a total increases of 4 percent, 4 percent and 3 percent during the three years. The city will pay 11.5 percent this year and 12.25 percent on July 1, 2015 to the states Police and Firemens Disability and Pension Fund. Pension pick up is a cost savings to the city versus paying as salary, Johns said. Warren McCord, union president, agreed with the mayor about the amount of the total increase compared with the salary increase. The final contract was a compromise, McCord said. We both came out equally disappointed in some areas, but definitely something we can both live with and work with, McCord said. There werent a whole lot of issues on the table from either side.
