Life lines rocketed skywards to wire suspended orange three pin plug sockets, Singers with bodies of metal, plastic and chrome, ornate and ultra modern. Pulsating needles pounded stitching into fabric of all descriptions, polished toe nails pushing heavily, softly on electric floor pedals, slender and old fat fingers feed coloured thread through silver machine bobbins, over locking machines with their three top mounted spools of cotton worked and rotated at the speed of light. Light …. They seldom saw it, six am to six pm six days a week, one hundred singer operators produced jeans, shirts, skirts, underwear anything, fluffy cotton nappies, bed sheets, uniforms. One hundred female singer operators did the torture for a pittance, tea towelled headed women, slave labourers some about to give birth some already back from birthing and some hoping to escape soon.
