Saints Cosmas and Damien are often called the Moneyless They can also be referred to as the Silver less Catholic History tells us that the twins were born 3rd century AD in Arabia They were twins and early Christian martyrs born in Arabia who practiced the art of healing in the seaport of Aegea (modern Ayas) in the Gulf of Issus, then in the Roman province of Syria. They were brothers by birth, and physicians by profession Though the Holy Martyrs inherited great wealth, they gave most of it to the poor and needy, only setting aside enough for themselves to devote their lives to the service of Christ. As Christian physicians, they freely performed their healing services for men and for beasts, asking the healed only to believe in Christ in thanks for their healing They accepted no payment for their services, which led them to be nicknamed (The Silverless); it is said that by this, they led many to the Christian faith They were summoned before the Emperor Galerius, who interrogated them and commanded them to worship the pagan gods. The brothers refused to do so, but to show the truth of the Christian faith, they healed the Emperor of a grave infirmity. During the persecution under Diocletian, Saints Cosmas and Damian were arrested by order of the Roman Prefect of Cilicia, one Lysias, who ordered them under torture to recant. However, according to legend the Holy Twins stayed true to their Christian faith, The twins endured being • hung on a cross, • stoned and • shot by arrows and finally • they suffered execution by beheading. Anthimus, Leontius and Euprepius, their younger brothers, who were inseparable from them throughout life, and also shared in their martyrdom. Their most famous miraculous exploit was the grafting of a leg from a recently deceased Ethiopian to replace a patients ulcered leg, and was the subject of many paintings and illuminations. The martyr twins are invoked in the Canon of the Holy Mass in the prayer known as the Communicantes (-From the first Latin word of the prayer) during the Liturgy of the Eucharist: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Day: In the Roman Catholic Missal, during the Eucharistic celebration, the Priest says: In communion with the whole Church, we venerate above all others the memory of the glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, then of blessed Joseph, husband of the Virgin, your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Saints Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude: The Church also venerates, Saints Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Laurence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian and all your Saints: Grant Oh Lord that, through their merits and prayers that in all things we may be defended by the help of your protection. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saint Cosmas and Saint Damien are also invoked in the Litany of the Saints.
